✍️ Artist Statement workshop
The artist statement is a fundamental piece of writing that gives readers a first snapshot of an artist's practice. Whether it's used on a website or an application, it should grab the reader’s attention and make them want to know more. But an artist statement can be tricky to write and it’s important to foresee possible flaws beforehand. This workshop will provide artists the knowledge, skills and techniques one needs to be able to write a clear and effective artist statement. WHAT WILL YOU LEARN DURING THIS INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP? How do I create an artist statement? What do I need to include? For whom? How can I address it in connection to the readers ( website, museum Galleries, Residencies, open call. What are the Do’s and don’ts when writing Which Length(s) does it have? What kind of Language, terminology, jargon could I use? This workshop helps you identify the diverse purposes an artist statement serves and the writing styles you can use to tackle them. If you wish to write an effective statement, you should also know how to produce a clear and coherent piece of writing. We will look into a number of do’s and don’ts to refine your writing style, with collective exercises while also considering examples of statements written by other artists. After learning some basic theory, you will be given time to write your own statement and will receive tailored feedback on a second session. Artists will learn the purpose of writing artist statements, the components of creating effective personal narratives, tangible tips for keeping their statements updated on a regular basis, modifying statements for different platforms and more. Learnings from this workshop can apply to improving applications for grants, residencies, fellowships, websites, portfolio; press releases; marketing materials and more. At the end of the workshop you will receive a toolkit you can refer to anytime you need, as the artist statement will change following your career path! If you would like to have specific information about the workshop feel free to contact us at hello@theartistandtheothers.nl

Femminismo Glitch
Italian translation of the Introduction of "Glitch Feminism" by Legacy Russell, commissioned by Kabul Magazine. Invecchiai. Morii. Tramite storytelling e metamorfosi, risorsi.

That thingy!? On being transcorporeal bodies in the digital age
👉 08/04/2021, 2PM CET The second reading group in the 'Odds against tomorrow' series at east contemporary focuses on: - Our (re)cognition of non-human agency; - Convergences in the digital realm e.g water enters the stock market; 3D printed fillet steaks; - The transterritorial, multi-level kinds of entanglements between humans and matter. Delivered by Angiet Chen aka Theodor Ussay (they/them). Angiet is a former architect and an artist-director currently working on their ‘Queer Kidneys’ series, a cinematographic piece on the threshold ecologies alongside the Jingmei River banks in Taipei, Taiwan. They practice storytelling and placemaking to address bodies of trauma, the structures of collectives, and the environmental entanglements between the two. They use VR, 3D and blockchain technologies as mediums. Their works take the shape of immersive experiences, indie-games, videos & films as well as curatorial programmes and workshops. Angiet holds an MRes degree in Fine Arts and Humanities at the Royal College of Art in London.

Claudia Contu and viral art criticism
On the occasion of the bi-personal exhibition “Holobiont Rhapsody”, a dialogue between the Eastern European artist, Stach Szumski (Danzica, 1992), and the Italian, Francesco Pacelli (Perugia, 1988) curated by Eastcontemporary in Milan, Federica Fiumelli interviewed Claudia Contu, a young critic and curator, who wrote the critical text that accompanies the exhibition. Invisibility, writing for art and viral languages may perhaps save us from a despotic futur

Zombies at the speed of light
Zombies at the speed of light - on time, (dead) matter and collective consciousness This reading group is the first event of eastcontemporary's public programme and will take place online on 26.01.2020 at 17:00 CET via eastcontemporary’s Zoom Platform. The reading group responds to eastcontemporary's inaugural exhibition "The Future in Reverse" by Agata Ingarden and Agnieszka Polska. The activity of the reading group is based on themes, books and texts, which inspired our research or those of the artists participating in our exhibition program ‘Odds Against Tomorrow’ planned for 2020/2021. It aims to build and develop a common theoretical base helpful in thinking and discussing themes related to the wide concept of the unknown future, its possibilities and impossibilities. All meetings will have a particular thematic focus and will take the form of workshops with texts, during which we will analyze the readings, often in reference to a determined exhibition or artist, and then develop a public conversation. The reading group is conducted in English and open to all, however it is recommended to book your spot in advance, since the places are limited. More info and booking at the link provided.

Bubble Tea Queer Reading: “The Man with the Compound Eyes” 酷兒共讀與對話:吳明益的複眼人FEAT. 珍珠奶茶
How might we reimagine our relationship with technology, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic? How might fiction serve as a portal to access queer realities? In this IG Live, the two co-founders of SLANT PROJECTS, Angiet Chen and Claudia Contu read the chapter 9 of “The Man With The Compound Eyes” (複眼人), a novel by Taiwanese author Wu Ming Yi (吳明益). They both got Taiwanese bubble tea regardless of the different locations they are based (Taipei and London). Rather than providing answers, the duo weaved their experiences with this chapter to access the proposed two questions. The reading re-interpreted the novel from a queer point of view given the themes of “loss” and “re-orientation” that this chapter captures. After the reading, the duo shared their lived experiences as long-distance, same-sex lovers as anchors to the mentioned themes in order to scrutinise our everyday relationship with technology and queerness. The discussion questioned how our imagination of “virtual intimacy” is limited by the heteronormative concept of ‘physicality’ while having to deal with loss and physical absence of the other. The duo considered how this paradigm could be shifted by rethinking our relationship with technology and allyship for discovering queer realities. The Instagram LIVE streamed on July 22nd, 2020 and was held on The Artist and the Others' Instagram profile.
