Biography

As a curator, author and critic, Valentine Umansky has worked for various institutions dedicated to visual arts and is currently acting as Curator, International Art at Tate Modern. Between 2015 and 2020, she relocated to the U.S., where she held various positions at the International Center of Photography, the Museum of Modern Art and the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. In France, between 2010 and 2015, she collaborated with the Rencontres d’Arles festival, and published Duane Michals, Storyteller (Filigranes). She has written for various art magazines, including Aperture and FOAM. Her most recent exhibitions include a solo presentation of works by Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, Saya Woolfalk and the group exhibition Confinement. Politics of Space and Bodies. In 2018, she also co-curated the LagosPhoto Festival, which led to the curation of a survey of modern and contemporary Nigerian art, Layers, with Iheanyi Onwuegbucha (2019-2020.)
