About

villa villa is a sustainable and climate-conscious arts programme dedicated to supporting contemporary artists, curators, writers, thinkers, and other cultural and environmental practitioners committed to more ecologically sensitive practices. Organised around the principles of sustainable living, the residency encourages participants to engage with the region’s local and rural context and we strive towards having a neutral impact. villa villa is a space that facilitates research, production and presentation of artistic practices outside of the urban context, while fostering relationships and collaborations both nationally and internationally. It aims to participate in the creation of new contemporary experiences built on social and environmental interaction. With a programme of open-ended residencies, talks, workshops and culinary and food-based research, villa villa aims to stimulate dialogue around contemporary issues and seeks to create a community of ecologically sensitive and environmentally respectful creative professionals.

Studio Visit with Rosanna Helena Bach
Continuing our series of studio visits 🔛 We met Rosanna Helena Bach at her studio in Lisbon to talk about her practice. ROSANNA HELENA BACH (1990, Switzerland) is currently based in Lisbon. Through mediums of drawing, glass, and installation Rosanna explores the visible and invisible threads through which we communicate and are connected. To better comprehend man’s understanding of himself in relation to nature, her research is rooted in the phenomenological, spanning from scientific theory to theological ideology. She often incorporates collected natural materials in her pieces, where she rearranges the literal (objective) to the metaphorical (subjective), inviting new meaning to be formed. This way, her work challenges linear thinking and duality through the synthesis of her own symbolic language. Environmentally Sustainable Artist Studio Practices: SURVEY REPORT
In March 2021, through the survey ‘how sustainable is your studio practice’, we collected information from 131 artists around the world on their efforts to making their studio practice more environmentally sustainable. The results of the survey provide evidence that there are many motivations for artists to seek to reduce their carbon footprint and waste output in the studio, as well as a number of limits and barriers they face in doing so. The survey also features many useful pieces of advice, tips and recommendations from artists including: 〰️ List of materials artists stopped using because it was harmful to the environment, 〰️ Examples of alternative materials they have found, 〰️ How they managed to reduce the waste created as a result of their practice, 〰️ Other steps they can take to further reduce their carbon footprint in the studio. We hope to empower artists to take steps towards sustainability in their practices and to give them the tools to initiate processes of change on a larger scale. Words: Alice Bonnot Design: Giovana Jenkins Peer review: Gabriella Sà (VILLA VILLA), Johanna Rietveld and Anika Schroter (Artswitch Foundation), Laura Lupton (Galleries Commit), Denise Araouzou (Curator), Marianna Ouralia (Curator and Researcher), Francesca Bibby (Writer) and Natasha Cox (Artist and Residency Manager). 🔗 Link to the survey bellow.

Studio Visit with Paulo Arraiano
Continuing our series of studio visits 🔛 We met Paulo Arraiano at his gallery Uma Lulik in Lisbon to talk about his practice. PAULO ARRAIANO (b. 1977) works as a visual artist, co-founder of Re_Act and No.Stereo. His research relates to the idea of visual seismography, assessing surges concerning new natural, social and cultural paradigms. This artistic production interweaves with his research which involves matter and anti-matter, and which engages with the body, the landscape and technology to address questions of climate change, biosphere, extinction, trans humanism and the anthropocene. Studio Visit with Tânia Geiroto Marcelino
We are very happy to announce a new series of artist studio tours on Art Curator Grid, starting with a visit to Tânia Geiroto Marcelino’s studio. TÂNIA GEIROTO MARCELINO (b. 1989) is a Portuguese visual artist, currently based in Lisbon. Working with the language of post-minimal interventive possibilities, Tânia’s practice explores the relationship she has with objects that surround her. This investigation takes the form of sculptures, paintings and drawings. Tânia’s approach to a sustainable studio practice has been to focus on the production of small-scale works using found objects or found parts of materials and avoiding toxic materials and processes. We met Tânia in her studio in Penha de França, Lisbon, where she took us through her current work in progress. Artist website: https://cargocollective.com/taniageirotomarcelino

Survey: How sustainable is your studio practice?
Calling all artists! We are working on a practical guide to help artists and art professionals lower the environmental impact of their practice in the studio. For this, we are asking artists to help us better understand the motivations and barriers that they may face when seeking to become more ecologically sensitive. Whether you are invested in confronting issues of human impact on the environment — or not quite yet — we want to hear from you. The results of this survey will be followed by an online discussion. Both formats are extremely insightful resources for us to identify the tools and systems required for lower-impact artistic practices and to develop an upcoming open-source guide on sustainable studio practices. We invite all artists who wish to participate in this survey to click on the link in our bio. This should not take more than 10min to complete. Deadline for completion is 30 March 2021. Link to survey below.
