Curatorial Text

Alina Maria Frieske’s work explores how we relate to and understand images, and how with enough vague perspectives we can create a clear picture of what’s really happening. A series of layers that the viewer has to peel off before understanding what exactly is looking at. The first level is the one from afar, the “big picture”, like impressionist paintings the subjects in Alina’s pieces can be better seen from some distance. Coming closer to the artworks you can start to wandering on the second layer, the “technique”: Alina found a way to paint with photographs, by taking hundreds of small fragments of found digital images and gradually pieces them together to create her own unique scenes. The third layer is the “why?”. Why such an elaborate process for coming back to portray simple daily life scenes? This is what stoked us in Alina’s work. The anti-sensationalism, the beauty and complexity of our reality. Her practice investigates some of the most contemporary issues such the value and accessibility of visual information online and the change of personal identity in the digital era. In 2020 our online presence became more and more important on every level, digital tools played a fundamental role to cope with long lockdowns and isolation. Most of us have soon get used to share their personal images on different digital platform on a daily base, creating hundreds of new memories every day. Memory is certain a central theme in Alina’s work, using images repetition to recall the passing of time. Looking at the artworks on show can make you feel like a passive spectator in a calm moment in a quiet living room. A wistful look out the window, the photo frames on the dresser, and the color scheme of deep reds and browns gives a real sense of nostalgia and the passage of time. The exhibition is an echo of what we experienced in the past year, isolation, introspection, boredom, but also appreciation for small things and time for building new ways. Press Release

Twenty14 is pleased to present the first Italian exhibition by German artist Alina Maria Frieske. Abglanz, which in German means reflection or a pale echo, is a series of collages in which hundreds of fragments taken from various photographs are assembled into new images, as if they were pieces of different puzzles mixed and matched in a single tableau. It is a body of work that deals with the digital world for the form but recalls the painting tradition for the practice. Through these compositions Alina Frieske pulls the strings of our perception on several levels, the viewer remains so uncertain about what is in front of him, is it a photograph or a painting? The subjects portrayed are mainly domestic and in a certain way really familiar, maybe because these artworks are based on everyday smartphone photos from the endless pool of the web. Put together, the images camouflage themselves in their mutual imitation. Which contours remain recognisable and what blurs in the crowd? Alina Frieske's work explores the dynamics between the individual and the mass, between figurative elements and illusion. The exhibition project is also conceived under a digital form, created in partnership with Art Curator Grid platform.
